Off-Road or All-Terrain Inline Skates
Many are curious but few try. Why?
What are Off-Road / All-Terrain Inline Skates?
Easy to spot with their large air tires, curiosity makes them some of our most viewed skates. They can skate where ordinary skates cannot but are not limited to off-road skating; all-terrain skates are the better name.
Nordic Skates and Roller Skis came first, with a long wheelbase that requires a long stride like that of cross-country skiing. A similarly long stride is required on Powerslide XC (cross-country) Skates. All-Terrain Skates came years later with a shorter and more agile wheelbase to satisfy thrill-seeking extreme sports enthusiasts. They could be seen skating dirt, forest trails, downhill mountain bike or motocross paths and even performing aerial tricks off jumps. The air tires maintain a level of agility that allowed skaters to roll over and through things never thought possible on wheels. If skating on pavement, maybe with some nordic skating poles from our accessories, they provide for an exhaustive full-body workout.
Why are people hesitant to try them?
Many hesitate to try off-road skates thinking they lack versatility and require a commitment to a single type of skating, or that they are too difficult. Neither holds any air in the tires.
Versatility
Most are not looking to skate dirt or downhill mountain bike trails every day. Converting between an all-terrain/off-road skate and a traditional inline skate is quick and simple. And remember, they are not just for off-road use.
Can I Convert Off-Road Skates to Regular Skates?
Yes. Powerslide Off-Road / All-Terrain Skates use the same boots as those on their urban inline skates. All use trinity frame mounting so that all are compatible with the dozens of trinity mount frames from Powerslide, Iqon, and Endless Blading. It is quick and easy to remove/install frames to skate traditional urethane wheels with many frames in any wheel configuration imaginable to choose from (cuff brake removal may be required should one be installed).
Can I Convert Regular Skates to Off-Road Skates?
Yes. Aftermarket Off-Road SUV Frames are sold on their own using UFS or Trinity Frame Mounting. This means you can easily change your UFS mount aggressive trick skates or any trinity mount boot from a traditional urethane wheel setup to an SUV Frame that skates large off-road/all-terrain air tires!
Can I Skate on the Pavement? Flat Surfaces? Uphill?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Many choose to skate all-terrain skates solely on these types of surfaces for intensive cardiovascular and endurance conditioning. Air tires have much more rolling resistance than urethane wheels, resulting in an incredibly exhaustive full-body workout.
If looking for an easier roll, Powerslide 150mm Roadrunner Urethane Wheels were made specific to be compatible with Off-Road SUV Frames. Roadrunner Wheels still offer a great workout, but with less resistance, have greater speed, and ease.
Difficulty
The large air tires may look intimidating and difficult to skate, but unless skating downhill they are super slow and easy to skate for skaters of any skill level when skated on flatter surfaces. The difficulty is in how intense the workout is and not in how difficult they are to skate.
Should you want to go downhill on dirt trails or similar, building up comfort and skill on flat and small declines first is recommended, along with proper protective gear.

- 3-Wheel All-Terrain Skates
The additional wheel makes these skates heavier, but the additional wheel helps to provide more grip, control, shock absorption, and allows them to roll over rougher terrain more easily.
- 3-Wheel All-Terrain Skates
-
- 2-Wheel All-Terrain Skates
Lighter and less rolling resistance but having just two contact points they are less stable and more difficult to turn. Two-wheel off-road skates are therefore best suited for more straight-line skating whether it offroad or on pavement.

Braking
Braking is easy with the Universal Cuff Brake System. To engage the brake, simply slide the brake foot forward. This allows the skater to slow or stop with all wheels remaining on the ground for stability. The Universal Cuff Brake is included with most off-road skate packages but is also sold separately should a replacement be needed.
The bearings used in air tires are the same standard 608 bearings that are used with traditional inline skate wheels. Wicked SUV Bearings shown with accessories are rust-resistant should you find damp conditions.
